From a Post Card by Ed Oliver and produced with his
permission. This is George Town Harbour circa 1938 with the Cimboco
in port. I understand from family members, that the original
photograph is among the McTaggart and/or Kirkconnell family, the original
picture being taken, by "Aunt Ella", from the home of Dr. Roy McTaggart
and showing the yard next door where Eldon and Charles Kirkconnell grew
up! This is another gorgeous piece of work I am very,
very proud of.
Again the picture does no justice to the vibrant
original colours. This piece is silk on canvas, is entirely
threadpainted, and took 57 hours to complete. It is framed in gold
with an ornate creme design, highlighted by creme matting and accented
with gold fillet.
A little bit of Caymanian history which brings me great
pleasure, seeing the Cimboco in Port and I consider the fact that it was
in 1937 that my mother sailed on the great ship to Jamaica, where she met
my father........and finally I came along! It also brought me
laughter as I showed it to some older Caymanians and they became
arguementative as they identified the various buildings and to whom they
belonged. "Now das my father's shop"/"Look at Emslie Church!"/"No de
Cayman Arms wasn't there!"/"Wha he name again, dah his boat shed!"/"Murhlie
come mek a tell yu how it go!" God bless all of my delightful
people.......I tell them, I wasn't there.
