| Christmas Carnival time in Jamaica and the
mascarades march about the streets, wearing headdresses and costumes, which
are scary for children who know them as Junkanoo! Or, so it was for
me! Bands provide the rhythm and the figures dance in line behind each other. Reds, yellows, oranges, browns – shades of every colour – abound to bring out the spooky tales of old Jamaica and the ‘orse ‘ead. Children fear the duppy as he moves to the beat of de funky music. They rejoice as his alligator headdress falls apart amid his movement and the flowers he hides under, fall to the ground without shadows. Feel the rhyhm! This piece was sold on completion to an anxious bidder in my family. It was as though the reggae beat was always playing while I worked and put together an idea from a post card, as my nephew watched me and memories returned. |
